Sky - Jiayu Liu

Audemars Piguet

Created for Jiayu Liu and commissioned by watchmaker Audemars Piguet, Sky is a Moving Image Sculpture which uses Machine Learning to imagine now clouds inspired by the sky above the AP factory in Switzerland.

We went on a field trip to Le Lac de Joux to capture images of the sky around the clock across a 4 day period. These image sets were used to train a custom GAN Neural Net which is able to generate new images of Clouds on demand, using just a noise vector as the source input.

The piece runs in real-time creating new cloud patterns according to wind direction and speed in the Swiss lake region. And adjusts its output according to the time of day.

The piece was presented in Beijing in 2018 - projection mapped onto a body of liquid in the shape of the Lac de Joux. Subsequently we have created versions of the piece for the artist for shows in Guangzhou and Shanghai.
